Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate effect of blood BHBA levels of primiparous cows in early postpartum period on folicle development and pregnancy rate after Ovsynch protocol. In the study, 85 Holstein primiparous cows with low-BHBA, 71 Holstein primiparous cows with moderate-BHBA concentrations were used as a material. In cows at postpartum 52±4 days, blood samples were collected and Ovsynch protocol was performed at the same day. Ultrasonographic examination was performed to determine DF diameter and CL at the day of 1st GnRH, PGF2α, 2nd GnRH and after 24 and 48 hours after these injections, response to the 1st GnRH and pregnancy status at 27-30. days post-insemination. Differences of DF diameter between groups at the day of 1st GnRH, PGF2α and after 24 and 48 hours after these injections and ovulation and atresia response to 1st GnRH were not significant statistically (p>0.05). It was determined that differences of DF diameter (low-BHBA: 13.8±0.2 mm; moderate-BHBA: 13.2±0.2 mm) and pregnancy rate (low-BHBA: 38.8%; moderate-BHBA: 21.1%) were significant statistically between low-BHBA and moderate-BHBA groups. It was concluded that levels of blood BHBA in primiparous cows in the early postpartum period affects the response to Ovsynch protocol.
