Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Omega-3Fatty Acid on survival of rat epigastric island flap subjected to total venousinsufficiency.Rat epigastric island flap was used in this study. The study was donein 40 male Wistar Albino rats. Animals were randomly assigned to twogroups: control and treatment. Sterile saline was administered to the rats inthe control group. Omega-3 Fatty Acid was administered to the rats in thetreatment group. The rats were observed for the postoperative three days. The rats were sacrified by high dose ether anaesthesia at the end of thethird day.Evaluation was done by macroscopic examination, histopathologicexamination and the measurement of flap necrosis with the Grid method. In the first postoperative day total necrosis was determined in thecontrol group while venous insufficiency was observed in the treatment groupon macroscopic examination. Total necrosis was also determined on the thirdpostoperative day in the treatment group. Macroscopic evidences wereconfirmed with histopathologic examination.According to the obtained results at the end of the experimentalresearch, Omega-3 Fatty Acid was found to be effective on survival of ratepigastric island flap subjected to total venous insufficiency.
