Abstract
Heavy-metal contamination is an important environmental problem in the world. High concentrations of heavy metals cause permanent damages to cells and tissues. In this study, the toxic effects of heavy metals in sunflower plant, in population and in molecular parameters were investigated. The effects of Zinc metal on sunflower seeds were determined using the changes in population parameters; root length, body length, and total soluble protein content. Total protein content of sunflower plant was determined in a relationship in the opposite direction increasing the amount of metal concentrations. Genotoxic effects of heavy metal of zinc on sunflower plants were investigated with RAPD and CRED-RA techniques. 14 RAPD primers were used for the analysis of RAPD and 165 polymorphic band patterns were found to be authentic. 8 primers that yielded precise and clear bands were used for the analysis of CRED-RA. Serious changes were observed in sunflower plants that were exposed to zinc heavy metal both at the population level and at the molecular level. As a result of the study the heavy metal zinc was determined as a genotoxic agent for sunflower plant.
